The 'Invisible' Majority: Living and Dying in the Google 3-Pack

The 'Invisible' Majority: Living and Dying in the Google 3-Pack

There is an old joke in the digital marketing industry: "Where is the best place to hide a dead body? Page 2 of Google."

But in 2026, the reality for local businesses is even harsher. You don't need to be on Page 2 to be invisible. You just need to be in Position #4.

For local service businessesdentists, plumbers, physios, cosmetic clinicsthe battleground has shifted entirely to the Google Map Pack (also known as the "3-Pack").

What is the 3-Pack?

When an Australian pulls out their phone and searches for "Emergency Dentist Richmond" or "Plumber near me," Google does not show them a list of websites.

It shows a map. And underneath that map, it shows three businesses.

  • Business A: 4.9 Stars (120 reviews) - "Open Now"
  • Business B: 4.7 Stars (85 reviews) - "Closes at 5 PM"
  • Business C: 4.5 Stars (40 reviews) - "On-site services"

Then, there is a button that says "More businesses."

Almost nobody clicks that button.

If you are Business #4, you are invisible. You are paying rent, paying staff, and doing great work, but digitally, you do not exist to the high-intent customer who needs help right now.

The Thumb-Scroll Economy

This behaviour is driven by urgency. 46% of all searches on Google have "local intent." These aren't people looking for information; they are people looking for a destination.

They make decisions with their thumb in under 3 seconds. They scan the reviews, check if you are open, and hit "Call."

If they have to click "More businesses" to find you, you have already lost. You have added friction to their problem.

How Do You Crack the Top 3?

Many business owners think getting into the 3-Pack requires "knowing someone at Google" or spending thousands on ads. It doesn't. It requires what we at DogmaEngage call "Search Everywhere Optimisation."

Google selects the Top 3 based on three pillars:

  1. Relevance: Does your business profile clearly state what you do? (e.g., Do you list "Root Canal" as a specific service, or just "Dentist"?)
  2. Distance: How close are you to the searcher? (You can't control this, but you can control your Service Areas).
  3. Prominence: This is the big one. This is your Reputation Flywheel. Are you getting consistent, fresh reviews? Is your information consistent across other directories? Are people clicking on your profile?

Invisibility is a Choice

Being stuck at Position #4 or #5 is usually a symptom of neglect, not a lack of skill.

It often means your Google Business Profile (GBP) categories are slightly wrong, your photos are outdated, ormost commonlyyou stopped asking for reviews six months ago.

At DogmaEngage, we specialise in moving businesses from the "Invisible Majority" into the "Visible Minority." We audit the signal you are sending to Google and fix the technical blockers keeping you off the map.

The Cost of Being #4

Take a look at your appointment book for next week. Now imagine if your phone rang just 20% more often.

That is the difference between Position #4 and Position #3.

Don't settle for invisibility.
